Amiina - Kurr (Ever)
2/5
By: Gareth Roberts
I really don't know quite what to make of Amiina. The last time I heard music like this it was emanating from a fluffy dog toy with a drawstring that when pulled produced the necessary dream-like xylophone sounds required to induce sleep in unsuspecting toddlers.
I'm inclined to think of them as some sort of female equivalent (all four members are of the fairer sex) of Sigur Ros, but that's just because they are making songs with few words that are abound in atmospheric wonder. However, the thing that drains any credibility out of such a comparison is the fact that whereas Sigur Ros manage to pull their music in all sorts of far-reaching directions, Amiina seem more than content to stay well within their cosy cottage in the middle of what I imagine to be some sort if enchanted forest.
When they get it right, as during 'Rugla', the effect is utterly compelling, an almost other worldly sensation engulfs until I almost feel that a stork is going to fly by and take me back from whence I came all those years ago (as is my understanding).
The problem is that these moments are few and irritatingly far between. I don't think I've ever sat listening to a record and been so agitated by the lack of what can only be described as 'action!' Yes, there are moments of transcendental beauty lurking within the blossom littered breadth of this record, but unless you're being pestered by a restless child (or suffering from severe insomnia), I can't see it being much use to you.
