Polly Paulusma - Fingers and Thumbs (One Little Indian)

2/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

Polly Paulusma - Fingers and ThumbsIf you want angry, strong, unashamedly money grabbing female rock, you listen to Alanis. If you want soft, sentimental and unashamedly money grabbing female rock, you've got Norah. Regrattably however, Polly Paulusma's 'Fingers and Thumbs', a somniferous slate of the mundane that cries desperation but is tellingly empty inside, does little to challenge that order of things.

Flirting with a style similar to Regina Spektor but unfortunately lacking both the depth and kookiness to pull it out of the bag, 'Fingers and Thumbs' concludes as a sardonic regurgitation of its own influences, to be enjoyed only by its creators and those trying to maintain their dignity as they tumble, lonely through menopause and towards death.

Polly's admittedly winning husk of a voice, barely audible in some parts, is tainted by its own egocentric fantasy of being grouped amongst other deservedly respected female heartstring pluckers. She's not tone deaf, nor does she have in any way what could be described as an ugly voice. Furthermore, you certainly wouldn't go so far as to call the song badly written, but without massive range or particular distinctiveness, each track washes over its self and bleeds narcissistically over your good mood.
