Calvin Harris - I Created Disco (Columbia)

2/5

By: Dan Monsell

Calvin Harris - I Created DiscoSo it would seem that it would be very difficult to be unfamiliar with the work of Calvin Harris. Whether you were aware of its creator or not, most of you - especially those whose lives began between 01/01/80 and 31/12/89 - will probably have experienced the club land radio-slaying super smash 'Acceptable in the Eighties' in one way or another. If you were unaware of the owner of that voice who's got 'love for you if you were born in the Eighties,' then you know now that it's a 23 year old man from Dumfries, apparently doing his very best to make "indie kids dance". It seems that someone forgot to tell Calvin that this is the only bloody thing that indie kids have been doing for the last couple of years or so. Heck, it might even be nigh on time that we stopped dancing.

Unfortunately Calvin is delusional on a few levels. First of all not only did he actually create Disco, but he also gets "all the girls" (unlikely having seen his mug), while people crowd onto his doorstep, trying into get in his front door. His songs speak of such arrogance, or of simple and silly declarations of "being in the industry" or of liking "them carrying a bit of weight around the bones girls". All the while soulless beats and synthesisers tick away behind; themselves practically ashamed at being such overt Mylo and LCD Soundsystem rip offs.

'Acceptable in the eighties' deserves it's place in the hearts of those who just love music with a great beat (and can think of little more to say about it); and there's catchy hooks a plenty to keep others happy throughout 'I Created Disco". This aside, the record's shortfalls mean this dose of Calvin Harris will not be remembered as anything more than a very attractive silver cover, containing a super pop smash hit padded out and dressed up with an album full of monotonous filler.
