The Broken Family Band - Hello Love (Track and Field)

2/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

The Broken Family Band - Hello LoveThe consensus here is that someone's upset. And that's me. I'm upset that the tree of indie - a long flourishing and resolute elm - has been picked to the point of frailty. Having generously and graciously proffered its most succulent spoils to past and present masters of down stroke chord rock, now lesser troupes are trying to feast on the same buffet.

What we are left with, and what has been farted out here, is unnecessary and uninspired pseudo-heartache garden path indie that claws desperately at heartstrings that have already been tugged into an indifferent oblivion. It's a dash of Snow Patrol dissonance without the playful enthusiasm, a squirt of Rolling Stones belligerence without the spirit. The songs groan and warble about love, love, love and it smacks of an introspective teenage breakup - one that should be either forgotten or relinquished, but definitely, categorically not shared with the public.

So, a sixth full length album, and I have to admit, my introduction to the Broken Family Band. Which is a shame, because it's made me want to avoid any more contact with them. Unless I'm contacting them with the end of my originality club, at speed. Granted, it's not all bad - the production is suitably clear and makes the songs chime with an ironically cheery punch, while there are occasional bursts of unexpected harmonic prowess - it's a middle of the road post-rock snore-fest that could do with injections of both wit and charm.
