Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals (Now We Are Free)

4/5

By: Gareth Roberts

Yeasayer - All Hour CymbalsOnce you get past a certain age it can become difficult to stomach some, nay most, music produced these days. As such, the aged muso needs a certain calibre of band to turn to who combine pop sensibilities with an altogether more mature attitude to the creation of song. Recent years have seen many a band with said ethos emerge to fulfil such a purpose, namely the likes of Beirut, Midlake and TV on the Radio. You've probably gathered what I'm getting at by now, but being a bit of a smart-arse I'll tell you anyway; Yeasayer are the latest in this trail of protagonists of what we'll self importantly deem real music. Indeed, such is the depth of their sound that some have even adorned them with that most dreaded and short sighted of all tags; 'world music.'

Whilst this may hold some truth, you shouldn't for one minute be put off.  This isn't some self-indulgent un-listenable concoction of bird squawks, bongos or harpsichords (feel free to insert your own world music stereotypes here). No, Yeasayer are far more, well, far more accessible than that.

As '2080' proves, these boys know their way around a tune as good as the next band, and like TV on the Radio and other aforementioned artists, they aren't afraid to take this ear for a song in directions your average band would be afraid to venture. As such we have a record brimming with interesting twists and turns, a plethora of musical styles that create a comfortable yet challenging depth to the record.

In short, it's likely to be heralded in certain circles - perhaps even in this circle of ours - as one of the albums of the year. If I were you I'd get on it fast and pretend you knew all along.
