Various Artists - Control OST (Warner)
3/5

Whereas Control is a film apt for Joy Division fans, the same may not be true for its soundtrack. For whilst the album does indeed comprise a compilation of some of the bands greatest hits, there's not enough here to entice real die-hard fans.
However, soundtracks are often unfairly held up to the same expectations as compilation or indeed 'Best Of' albums, when their purpose is entirely different. Therefore, with its offering of snippets of dialogue, as well as a patchwork of songs that represent the film's plot and 'journey', Control OST is a successful reminder of what made the movie so great.
For anyone with more than a passing interest in seminal bands of the 70's and 80's, the track listing of Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and David Bowie may not represent much of a challenge. However, with an additional song from The Killers (their cover of 'Shadowplay'), live material from The Buzzcocks and a cast version of 'Transmission', there is something to single the album out as a stand-alone homage to the film.
The most appealing part of the Control OST is nothing more complicated than then pulling together of a collection of great songs in one album. If you're a New Order completist or fancy a quick-fire jaunt through great bands of the modern era, this album is a must-have. However if you're expecting a Joy Division revelation, or indeed, the unexpected, you may just be disappointed.
