Silje Nes' Ames Room is a homespun yarn of atmospheric clicks, beeps and hums.
It's best surmised in 'Long Shadow Left Around', but there are fourteen other impressive nuggets of home recorded whisperings which tinker with spoon percussion and tamper confidently with whistles and robot kick drums here and there.
The LP in structure is best a likened to that employed by Japan's Tujiko Noriko, although this experiments more organically with softer samples and less vocal leads. Comparable also to electronic Finish instrumentalists like Islaja and Lau Nau, only more active with less guitars and higher production, Silje Nes - Norway's startling new addition to the FatCat records line up - is fascinating, dizzy and strangely beautiful.
It's a modest pantomime of intricate sound threads pieced together to form an abstract silk of pretty electronic noise. The pop guitar mix in 'Escape' is a contented parody of awe-inspiring grace and vast innocence, whilst 'Drown', with slightly more levels, is a downtrodden electric symphony.
Upbeat, restlessly childish and simplistically detailed, Ames Room has an imposing lightness which is deep, compelling and euphoric without being transparent.
