The Black Ghosts - Mixtape (Southern Fried)
3/5
By: Ailsa Caine
There comes a point in any decent night out where you have no idea what you're listening to, but you're fairly sure it's good. It's this hazy recollection of such feelings that first come over you when listening to Black Ghosts' Mixtape. Rather than lend themselves to any overtly goth sensibilities which their name might suggest, the Back Ghosts' sound is instead a dark, heady mix of disco and more synth heavy interpretations. The result is an eclectic rendering of the usual dancefloor sounds, breathing a breath of fresh air into what can sometimes be a soulless genre.
Tracks to look out for are a remix of The Gossip's 'Listen Up'- Ditto's vocals working perfectly over any kind of mix up- and the very 90's esque Mars. Each has the capacity to fill you with good time vibes usually only found after 12pm and a few too many Bacardi Breezers.
Mixtape is not a 'seminal' record, not is it redefining anything as we know it. However, innovation can sometimes be an over enthused component when all most people are looking for is good music. To that end it's worth knowing that Black Ghosts' Mixtape is what it suggests- a great mix of beats, sounds, influences and songs which all build up to an enthusiastic, and fun, 20-odd track playlist.
