Goldrush - 'Don't Bring Me Down' (Hut)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

Whilst the rest of the world seems to be going crazy for long-haired, big-riffed rock monsters who want to party like its 1973, Oxfordshire quintet Goldrush have quietly been going about their business: namely, making one of the year's most vitalizing albums.
Not since Travis' 'The Man Who' has timeless songwriting with a melancholic tinge been executed so well. 'Don't Bring Me Down' is all about plaintive acoustic balladry ('Let You Down', 'Best Intentions') superb, three-minute pop singles ('Same Picture', 'Wide Open Sky'), rousing sing-along choruses ('Landscapes') and uplifting brass-accompanied numbers ('Bright Eyes').
'I don't want to be a pioneer/Bursting through a new frontier,' sings Robin Bennett on, funnily enough, the song 'Pioneers'. But, Bennett, it isn't a problem: with songs as strong and ageless as these, Goldrush needn't worry about breaking any fresh ground.
