Blimey.
Somebody send Micachu some Ritalin...
The Filthy Friends Mixtape is a raucous short-attention-span A.D.D masterpiece. Its marvellously jumbled selection of sounds includes tracks lasting from 30 seconds to (only one reaching past) 3 minutes; snappy choppy changes from one tune to the next; drum 'n' bass to indie, electro to garage, grime to pop; this is quite literally The Beta Band on speed.
Using a mess of loops, a mish-mash of vocals, heavy electro basslines, funk/soul sounding bass guitar in parts, random drum samples flowing out of natural sounding rhythms, and sections devoid of anything other than speech; Micachu (Mica Levi, a 21 year old classically trained violinist) exposes us to what feels like the music of the future, for a jilted generation of kids with concentration issues.
With track running times diminishing with every new genre that hits the charts, it's hardly surprising that something that moves as thick and fast and totally mental as the Filthy Friends Mixtape has made its arrival. Included in the mix are artists like The Golden Silvers, Toddla T, Capitol K and a magnificently remixed excerpt of Jack Penate's 'Spit At Stars'.
I think the main 'hat-off' to Micachu regarding this mixtape has to be for all the random little samples going on. I mean, the music is heavy, and if you are even occasionally listen to... well, music, there is no one genre here. If you like anything from Reggae to Indie Rock, Hadouken! to Santogold, Tinchy Strider to The Infidels, and even perhaps some aspects of Mr.Scruff or Krafty Kuts, there is something for everyone within the 33 tracks on offer.
I want to know how she puts this together, and I want to see her do it live. I'm impressed, Micachu. This is a brilliantly inspired release from a very talented girl. Go mental to it during a bout of insomnia. Just don't put it on to relax...
