We Are The Physics - Are OK At Music (This is Fake DIY)

4/5

By: Sam Crawford

We Are The Physics - Are Ok At MusicI've been told that in business, the Scottish come top of the list for having the most desirable accent; showing a genuine and affable persona that helps them connect with people. I couldn't give a sh*t about business, but when it comes to the music delivered by We Are The Physics, they are very likeable, and it isn't just due to their endearing Glaswegian vocals.

The punk infused danceable indie that they deliver on their debut album; We Are The Physics Are Ok at Music, is like a high speed joyride through city streets, complete with police chases and close calls, but holding the peace of mind that you're gonna end up happily drinking cider on your mate's sofa at 4am rather than sweating it out in a cell nursing a baton bruise.

One of their main strengths is the instant rush of excitement that hits when you hear them. They expertly create hooks that infect you with involuntary rhythmical twitches; if you're listening to them with headphones on the train then make sure you tell the fitty opposite that you don't have Parkinson's, it's just The Physics.

It's best to describe this album's features as a whole, as although it's a riot, the songs all have very similar traits. They all share a healthy desire to whip the listener up into a frenzy, with unwaveringly fast tempo, guitars thrashing catchy off kilter melodies, the bass riding low with constant bombardment the key ingredient, and the vocals being delivered in quick sharp bursts of boundless energy. ...Are Ok At Music doesn't give you chance to get bored; it's all over in thirty exhilarating minutes.

They cite Adam Ant, Futureheads and Polysics as influences; though I'm pretty surprised Dead Kennedys aren't mentioned. The pace of the music, the hefty reverb on the guitar, the loose rattling bass riffs and the speedy jumped-up Biafra style vocals all elicit DK comparisons. That's right, they aren't amazingly original, and they don't deviate at all from their repetitive formula, but they do provide half an hour of immense satisfaction and rebellious fun, leaving you feeling like you've just encountered a huge brawl and won hands down.
