Quite mistakenly, I've always read this band's name as Ellie Milano rather than Elle, and so I was a little surprised when I first spun the CD. Do you remember a certain character in Trigger Happy TV? He was dressed as a punk, looked generally disreputable and often had 'F**K' or 'MURDER' written across his forehead, but then whenever he actually said something he sounded the antithesis of what was expected, really rather intelligent and articulate. Nothing like what you'd expect. Well, this is akin to how I felt when the CD started.

The opener track 'Laughing All The Way To The Plank' is an measured introduction welcoming you in to both the fast and the slower sounds of the band, before 'Meanwhile In Hollywood' arrives with its rapping verses and introspectively global themes; a catchy little ditty but not the finest example of the threesomes work. No, if you want punk pop perfection with jutting angles and spikes penetrating the fabric of the melodic tunes, then I recommend you skip to a the following tracks 'My Brother, The Astronaut', 'Curiosity Killed The Popstar' and 'I Know Its Good But I'm Playing It Down'.

Elsewhere, 'Katsuki & The Stilletoed Stranger' (awesome title eh?) is a dig around in the softer soil. It floats along; the guitar riffs are sweet with a slightly bitter edge, the dark undertones remain bubbling under the surface and threaten to spill over before dying away at the end. These hints at torture reappear within tracks like 'The Nightclub Is Over'.

Elle Milano have presented us with a obtuse punk pop rockier box of tricks. It you see their names in a festival line up this summer head over to the tent and check out these three young scamps. And remember it's Elle not Ellie Millano, so no Duffy-alikes to worry about.
