Guttermouth - 'Gusto' (Epitaph)

3/5

Guttermouth - 'Gusto'

They may hail from the same part of the world as Green Day, Blink-182 and The Offspring, but hard rockin', hard drinkin' Orange County quartet Guttermouth prove adept at carving out their own niche in the pop-punk market.

True, bratty starter 'Camp Fire Girl # 62' has an opening couplet that rhymes 'marijuana' with 'iguana', but the 'Mouth are willing to shift from the basic three-chord, two minute outline, the verse of 'Contagious' could almost paying tribute to the granddaddies of geek-rock, The Violent Femmes, simultaneously containing a riff that's virtually a direct lift from The Strokes' 'New York City Cops'. 'Foot-long', meanwhile, even opts for a summery 60s harmony-pop vibe (man), whilst 'Looking Out for Number One' is nearly The Levellers - on a good day.

Even as it draws to a halt, the amusement never ceases; Mark Adkins' deadpan monologue describing the pathetic existence of a drunk on closer 'Lemon Water' should be tragic, but ends up as a wryly comic take on the dastardly effects of the demon drink. Indeed, it's observations such as, 'It makes me order three orders of buffalo wings when I would normally have just one... It forces me to bob my head to songs that I really, really hate...' that pretty much sum up Guttermouth's world: maybe viewed through the beer-goggles a little too often for comfort, but a whole lot of fun nonetheless.
