Binario - Binario (Far Out)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
They may eschew the sequinned catsuits of fellow Brazilians CSS, but Rio septet Binario's self-titled debut exhibits a funky flair that draws upon disparate influences to create an absorbing hybrid.
Some purely instrumental tracks won't harm their broader international appeal (especially in a musical climate seemingly ever more conducive to world music) but there are moments on Binario which feel as beholden to mainstream indie rock as any new young pretenders.
The aptly-named 'Funeral' centres around an Interpol-ish doomy bass rattle and taut guitar twang, whilst 'Vamanda' sounds like a South American version of The Strokes. But the Spaghetti Western-flavoured 'Amor Liquido' and the multi-act 'LKJ''s glitchy TV On The Radio-style future rock hint at a broader vision.
