Pure Reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Ominia (Superball)
3/5

'Amor Vincit Omnia' is the Latin for 'Love Conquers All' - a statement which I am somewhat dubious about ironically, as it reflects exactly how I feel about Pure Reason Revolution. Let's explain.
Upon hearing opening track 'Les Malheurs' (which I believe means 'The Misfortunes' - this band seems to be a slight fan of other languages), I was quite impressed by the potential contained in their considerate mix of trembling rock, obscure dance rhythms and suitably undecipherable singing. 'Victorious Cupid' was even better, building quickly into an epic rock workout; it's a bit like one of those 3D puzzles, giving you an extra dimension to more normal, quizzical endeavours.
Yet it seems Pure Reason Revoultion peak a little too quickly, as from the confusing three parter of a track 3 in, the band fail (in numerous but not all instances) quite spectacularly to find the right balance between being a traditional rock band and an electronic dance act. 'Disconnect', which features computerised voices, soft piano and high vocals amongst far too many electronic noises is a case in point - the clutter just makes the thing feel messy.
It seems the members of Pure Reason Revolution can't quite make up their mind which genre they want to be in. I'm not saying mixing genres shouldn't be done; many bands achieve excellent things by mixing it all up a bit, but PRRjust fall short - the opening tracks are great, but they over complicate things with dance beats and electronic inventions that seem somewhat half formed. It's like they got the puzzles mixed up.
