The Hells - 'The Hells' (Artrocker)
4/5
By: Toby L

Debut bass-less rock 'n' roll shenanigans from further stars of the r 'n' r underground, The Hells comprise the distinctly sassy, European tones of female-vocalist Ippy, guitarist Kev and, on this release only (since he's now re-joined the famously drummer-unfriendly Icarus Line), sticks-man Jeff Watson.
So ensues a meaty, six-track love-fest where anything goes - especially in the way of Rolling Stones rip-off, pelvic-thrusts (the glimmering, just-entered-a-club pouts of 'Sensation'), noisy art-chaos ('Do What I Should') and really rather intriguing hap-dash hazard of an instrumental ('Daddy's Soul Doughnut'). If it wasn't quite so instantly warming, you'd presume the product to be somewhat derivative - a hoop that, thankfully, the duo seldom find the necessity to jump through.
'The bass-player in the rock 'n' roll band, is the one that puts me in the trance', whilst, apparently, the drummer leaves her 'hair in a mess', claims the sultry Ippy on rousing closer 'He's The Devil (But I Love Him So'); well, this lot may not currently have either such contingents to speak of, but, still, they manage to sound a whole hell of a lot more fuller than most creative-ensembles double their size.
