Passion Pit - Manners (Columbia)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
This year's MGMT? Whilst there's perhaps nothing quite so immediate on Manners as there was to be found lurking within Passion Pit's fellow Brooklynites' debut Oracular Spectacular (See: 'Kids'; the glorious 'Time To Pretend'), PP's first record serves up eleven generous helpings of dizzyingly effervescent electro-pop Prozac.
In amongst the Daft Punk-ish 'Folds in Your Hands' and platitudinous euphony of 'Eyes As Candles' we discover 'Moth's Wings' providing a synth-rock take on Arcade Fire - all thunderous percussion and Michael Angelakos' rousingly highfalutin' lyrics ("I've come revelling, burning incandescently....Put down your sword and bow, come lay with me on the ground.")
Stand-out 'Little Secrets' hitches the Flaming Lips' fevered optimism with a buoyant kids' choral chant of "higher and higher and higher" a la The Avalanches, to rapturous effect.
