A - 'Nothing' (London Records)
2/5
By: Matt Tomiak
It is more than a little bit ironic that the record that could possibly result in A's biggest hit to date is a tune resembling the polar opposite of what fans have come to admire about the band.

'Nothing' is light years away from the cheeky panache of 'Old Folks' or the irrepressible 'I Love Lake Tahoe'. A, previously synonymous with light-hearted fun, have chosen as their comeback single something that is almost anything but. This is leaden, downbeat, and verging precariously close to nu-metal. Frontman Jason Perry's less-than-sparkling insights, such as 'Nothing's where you're at/When you ain't got something' don't help proceedings too much.
The first new A material is sadly, a disappointment. Here's hoping the new album, due out in March, provides a better reflection of what made A so special in the first place, and how they're truly such a special gem in the current climate of forgettable pretenders.
