A Perfect Circle - 'Weak & Powerless'

No doubt, A Perfect Circle have a lot to live up to with this heavily awaited debut single off their follow-up album to the hugely successful 'Mer de Noms'. To top that is their own band member's individual reputations and incredibly successful biographies, glitzed with world-tours and outstanding record-sales. Pressure.

This time with Marilyn Manson bassist, Jeordie White (previously known as Twiggy Ramirez) and Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, in tow it adds even more expectation. To boot, new album 'Thirteenth Step' is depicted as 'a conceptual exploration of the darker side of the human psyche'. So surely taking one single out of that collective, makes independent assessment somewhat tarnished.

It is, however, a frightfully intense composition - darker in a more premeditated and absorbing way, yet at the expense of the pain, angst and meddling qualities of their prior works. Somehow, the more mature spin seems to hint that the band are heading back to the original backbones for creating APC; to conjure music that fulfils themselves (no longer selling out concerts to thousands of Tool fans with sweaty mitts full of CDs, then). Yet, despite this very admirable step back, you can't help but feel it's at the risk of losing the soul; only time will tell.
