Alkaline Trio - 'All On Black' (Vagrant)

3/5

Alkaline Trio - 'All On Black'

Even the jaded, aged f**ks amongst us can't help but nod along in polite agreement to these two contrasting, yet completely complimentary voices, engrossed in soaring choruses and pumpy, punchy verse-structures.

Alkaline Trio, then - bullied and nudged into the pop-punk corner, dubbed the somewhat rougher, darker Blink 182, and bearing yet another single with the mark of a 'pre-adolescent anthem' about it: a source potent enough to trigger kids bopping and smashing into each other with reckless abandon at one of their numerous arena dates.

But popularity and, indeed, success shouldn't scorn a band's respect or creditability amongst the more astute of us. No, the trio don't offer anything particularly new, but they're certainly quite different; a poetic and quite melancholy narrative provoking a much deeper, more thoughtful edge to the mundane 'Let's get mashed and f**k your Mom' guitar-pop that they're up against, and are associated with, however unfairly.
