Anamorphic - 'The Engine House Sessions' (Animal Noise)

3/5

By: Toby L

This half-Swedish-half-UK quintet deserve notoriety if only for the bizarre fact that their drummer got deported at a time when the band's name got bandied around on the London scene as an act that were worth checking out. However, the depth of the material on 'The Engine House Sessions' proves that there's plenty more to linger on when considering what the group represents.

Lead-singer Andrea Sparding leads the group with her sprightly voice, though it's difficult to fully grasp her talent because you're unable to get past the fact that Alison Goldfrapp or Beth Gibson are frankly superior in their delivery. However, what's provided is still a spirited resonance, that works in a fine harmony with the highly diverse array of tracks to be found on the EP.

Of the selection, particularly noteworthy is the opening 'Slow Song', whose winding guitar hook would be made of ample use on any indie record, let alone a dance group looking to fuse the elements of different genres into an accessible musical mould. For this, though, there is the virtual opposite, in the form of the downbeat and tranquil 'The Girl In The Suitcase', the other two tracks providing scope for what will no doubt be an acceptable debut album, due out next year.

For the meantime, however, this manages to do what it's supposed to - fill the gap until the full LP is released. Know your Tricky from your Portishead? Then maybe this is for you.
