Badly Drawn Boy - 'You Were Right'

What better way to dismiss and belittle your public-persona than to do so in, erm, public?

Well, this is the level of logic that Damon Gough is currently operating on within the mournful yet simultaneously uplifting first single from his second album of 2002, 'Have You Fed The Fish?'. Contemplating the prospect of how Madonna 'took a shine to me', Gough exorcises his demons by ridiculing the fabric of celebrity, whilst producing a clanging eruption of strings and clicky-clacky guitars, only slowing the effect to utter the impact cast upon his life 'the night Sinatra died, the night Jeff Buckley died, the night Kurt Cobain died'... It's harrowing, but utterly beautiful.

Consistently swerving over the fine line between self-indulgence and introspection, with anyone else, it wouldn't be acceptable, but BDB serves up a winner every time; with this, we'll let him get away with it yet again.
