Basement Jaxx - 'Lucky Star' (XL)

Basement Jaxx - 'Lucky Star'

Is it likely that Basement Jaxx ever have an off-day (or a day off for that matter)? Could they ever turn to each other and say, 'I'm actually feeling a trifle down today, fancy sampling some Smiths?' No siree, bob. This is a band where nothing little or quiet will do, and only the most rumbling, ass-shaking, gurning street-beats make the cut.

'Lucky Star' sees the Jaxx teaming up with recent Mercury Music Prize winner Dizzee Rascal - a man known for coming out of nowhere with very deep, underground hip-hop and having a choir repeatedly singing his name (a bit Craig David, but there you go). On 'Lucky Star', Dizzee's signature-delivery dances all around throbbing, Asian-influenced thumps and farts; coming up like a muscled-up Bollywood musical, drenched in pills and staged in The Fridge in Brixton.

And like nearly everything Basement Jaxx do, it's music for that 'having it large!' party where you come around face down in someone's front garden. It may be a repetitively tried 'n' tested formula, but one they seemingly never fail at.
