Ash - 'Free All Angels' (Infectious)

4/5

By: Natalia Thorpe

Ash - 'Free All Angels'We heard this album and all the depression left us - we started to fly...

Conclusively - this is possibly the best thing Ash have ever done: in fact, once it's been heard a few more times - and everyone knows every word of it - its popularity will surpass that of their classic-debut, '1977'.

You see, 'FAA' takes the pop element of its former partner and the slightly harder edge of 'Nu-Clear Sounds', combines them, throws in some wonderful string arangements and harmonies with the end result being a more mature yet extremely appealing body of sound. Seemingly, Ash have done the teenage angst thing, grown up a bit, given it some time and now they are back with something that's catchier than foot and mouth disease. This will be the soundtrack to the summer.

The thing about lead singer/guitarist, Tim Wheeler, is that he is a damn good song-writer as well, and, along with the genius of Owen Morris - who is back to produce this long-player - it's sure to be regarded as a classic. For the note-takers, the songs range wildly from the grace of 'Sometimes' and 'There's A Star' to the heavier 'Burn Baby Burn' or 'Pacific Palisades' and stunning, statement-of-intent closer, 'World Domination'. Yeah, other bands should be taking lessons on writing lyrics from Ash: they know how it's done. Anyone with pop sensibilities should go buy it - we've just rekindled an old flame for this band; we suggest you do too.
