Bell X1 - 'Tongue' (Island)
3/5
By: Toby L

Masters of the brash-then-minimalist variety, Bell X1 are the kind of band most kids today strive to form after spinning their collection of Radiohead, Japanese-only rarities to death.
This features a whole manner of intrinsically rewarding techniques - a moody, growling solo-cum-middle-eight section, a big, bold singing-voice and noisy guitars, sandwiched between a couple of calmer, more teasing moments of sombre introspection.
Whilst not quite as landmark as their heroes, there's no doubting that the 'X1 are, at the very least heading, in a correct direction. Which - for an early single - is exactly what you want to hear.
