The Beta Band - 'Squares' (Regal)
4/5

Second-time lucky, right?
Scotland's finest The Beta Band attempted this as a single last year, though were headed off at the pass following the intervention of dance act, I-Monster, who had sampled the same tune as the Beta's in their single of the time. What resulted was The Beta Band pulling back their release of 'Squares', and I-Monster going on to score a top-twenty hit. Oops...
Well, never ones to accept defeat, the Band are back, and have brought with them their valiant slice of 'Daydream'-associated lazy pop. If this record were a person, it would be your drunken friend: you know, the one always slouching in public-places, clinging to his hand a bottle of cider, a spliff rolling around in his mouth. However, slightly more alluring than that is the slick production, smooth ambience and Steve Mason's ever-soothing voice.
Although it's unlikely this will cause the impact it once could have done, 'Squares' definitely doesn't deserve to fall on to unwelcoming ears; besides, it'll be their last single for ages probably - so enjoy it.
