Bjork - 'Cocoon' (One Little Indian)

4/5

By: Toby L

BjorkNever a woman to go down the commonly frequented trap-door for musicians named 'stale', Bjork returned in 2001 with 'Vespertine', an album many reckon to be her finest to date.

While the intimacy and bizarre, big time sensuality of the specified album is best characterised on album-tracks, 'Cocoon' - of the singles already released from 'Vespertine' - is easily the most enchanting to hit the shelves yet.

The minimalist use of instrumentalism and prominent dabbling in electronic sound-effects allows the Icelandic star's voice to float around your head in a more coherent and, quite simply, moving fashion than ever before. The words uttered? Well, you could say they're unrepeatable, but that's only because the delivery of such sentimentally-driven sexual matter is hardly as innocent read on-screen as it is when sang from the mistress of experimental pop herself.

So, to summarise, you can't exactly envisage the commercial radio-stations picking up on this desolate, atmospheric, though exquisitely recorded piece, but if you like your singles epic, chilled and sincere, then the nature of such work as 'Cocoon' should point you in the right direction.
