Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 'Love Burns' (Virgin)
4/5

So their album isn't due out in the UK until next month. It has, however, been available in our local record-shop for months. It's great, but who cares when they're oh sooooo cool? After all, you too can be the envy of your mates by buying this single and displaying it proudly by sticking the sleeve onto your forehead.
This is why 2001 was surely the year that hype went mad. From Hear'Say to the White Stripes, everyone was talking to everyone about everyone who was cool. Or something. Towards the end of the year, though, the name Black Rebel Motorcycle Club began cropping up again and again. So, have the dangerous boys in black got what it takes to back up the interest (a la The Strokes) or will they fall flat on their backs (a la everyone else)? The answer is... Yes to the first one - definitely.
The music; although extremely retro in styling, the Rebels have a certain charm in a trashy Lou Reed/James Dean kinda way. Scuzzy and sexy, 'Love Burns' takes you through a psychedelic, pre-punk land where leather jackets take precedence over 6-minute solos and attitude bites nearly as hard as the vocal rasp that's conjured up. Not bad at all...
