British Sea Power - 'Carrion' / 'Apologies To Insect Life' (Rough Trade)
4/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw

When night comes and headphones seduce, adorn British Sea Power and listen at volumes louder than you can tolerate.
'Carrion' will elevate the hope of those disenchanted with this sorry industry. Sublime songsmithery that smoulders with a breathless vocal that could be the offspring of a Bowie/Malkmus love affair... So listening to 'Apologies To Insect Life', the second A-side, comes as quite a shock. Experimental garage-rock; what is this? And why? Yet more raucous yelping and an infectious riff in what seems an endless wave of what has soon become 'old hat'. A worthy addition by all means, but one that cowers in its former's shadow.
As this bizarre coupling suggests, BSP seem unsure where their talent lies, but 'Carrion' remains a true classic in the making, and a push of the boundaries of their musical horizons seems no bad thing.
