British Sea Power - 'Remember Me' (Rough Trade)

4/5

British Sea Power - 'Remember Me'

It's Rough Trade Records' birthday. Aren't we meant to get them a present or something? In a reversal of traditional etiquette, to coincide with the celebrations of their whole quarter of a century of existence at the forefront of British music, they're giving us a little gift instead... We must remember to send a thank you note.

For the gem in question is 'Remember Me', a timely reminder of why British Sea Power are one of the best bands in England by a considerable distance. On it, they're revealing to us another side to their overly foliaged musical persona, one built on the strong foundation of some really rather huge riffs. It yelps and jolts with an electrical energy and sincere compassion - try to imagine Nirvana wrestling with 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and you're halfway there.

Yes, it's brilliant. Though that's what we've come to expect from these guys. But how much do we trust our brightest young hopes these days, how much are we willing to wager on their success? Seeing as even the b-sides here are wonderful, quite a lot. Let's say we raise our expectations, ask them to go absolutely stellar with the next record. All signs reassure our suspicions - BSP will not let us down.
