I Am Kloot - 'I Am Kloot' (Echo)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

I Am Kloot - 'I Am Kloot'

Sophomore effort from the Tim Burtons of northern indie - an ostensibly ordinary band who exist in a slightly twisted twilight zone.

Yes, the world of I Am Kloot is a skewed, eerie place, and the macabre tone is set early on via the portentous opening couplet of 'From Your Favourite Sky': 'Do you dare take a breath?/Do you dream of a tragic death?' Just try to refrain from an icy shudder.

Despite hailing from Manchester, John Bramwell's nasal-tones are more reminiscent of famed Scouse loon Lee Mavers, ex-of The La's; although, if you are looking for best-encompassing reference-points, Doves' pensive, sombre debut 'Lost Souls' is a pretty good one, doused with a tough of menace. Relevantly too, it's the most disturbing tracks on 'IAK' that are also the best ones - Bramwell almost psychotic on some of these, notably the fantastically dark 'Cuckoo'.

That's not to say the more conventional tunes aren't up to it: the exquisite, sparse 'Not A Reasonable Man' and closer 'The Same Deep Water As Me' showcase I Am Kloot as being just as adept with more traditional, endearing forms.
