The Burn - 'The Smiling Face' (Hut)

The Burn - 'The Smiling Face'

'The Smiling Face' may be the debut single from one of the bearded set of bards they call The Burn, but they're already veterans of the live circuit.

The magic of Oasis, Ian Brown, and Paul Weller, all of whom The Burn have opened for, has been well considered; 'The Smiling Face' contains the brash braggadocio of Liam, King Monkey and the Modfather in their prime. A big, fat snarling beast of a tune, driven by 'Swamp Song'-style harmonica, slide guitars and pounding drums, it declares its intentions from the outset: 'The Smiling Face is gonna f*** you over,' their frontman warns somewhat correctly.

One of 2002's best new bands? Who knows - but it certainly ain't worth betting against it...
