Danny Connors & The Butchers Gate - 'Set 'Em Free' (Deltasonic)
4/5
By: Matt Tomiak
Employing the same logo typeface, psychedelic artwork and deranged, schizophrenic musical eclecticism as The Coral, it's heartening that 23-year-old Danny Connors' debut EP is every bit as innovative as the Hoylake scallies.
Citing, appropriately enough, legendary La's frontman Lee Mavers as his primary inspiration, Connor's madness is of the most sublime order. Best of all on this mighty compilation is the hilarious tale of extra-terrestrial abduction found within 'Aliens', which opens with the not-entirely-logical couplet: 'I was driving home just the other night/Six O' Clock in the morning to be precise'. And, brilliantly, the work just gets weirder from that point on... May we pray he can just sustain such insanity for future works.
