Graham Coxon - 'Escape Song' / 'Mountain Of Regret' (Transcopic)
3/5
By: Toby L

Graham Coxon's return to the world of music is not, as once anticipated, with his former-enterprise Blur, but - instead, once again - as a contemplative solo-artist.
And, once again, the numbers of characters involved with such an endeavour are notably minimalistic, Coxon co-producing, writing and performing most of the material himself. Although such competence has been impressive in the past, criticisms have been levelled at the varying degrees with which ole' Graham has chosen to 'finish' individual songs and records, though anyone within even the remotest earshot will struggle to not enjoy his latest work.
With straightforward rock-outing 'Escape Song', his focus on the distinctive brandishing of bashing guitars, well-timed drums and lowly-evolved bass forms a severe twist to the ensuing country and western ballad, 'Mountain Of Regret', which is every bit as introspective and candidly open as you could wish for, the notable parallels of Badly Drawn Boy's 'Pissing In The Wind' just ever so slightly on-show.
In times of so many frequent insincerities, it's an uplifting sign to see that Coxon is still staying true to himself, and solely creating music that tugs the heart-strings. Power to the man.
