The Darkness - 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' (Must Destroy)
5/5
By: Thomas Hannan

It's only taken us 33 years, but finally, we've perfected the 1970s; a decade isn't long enough to formulate something this perfect anyway. It's up to The Darkness to show us how it should have been done. And although you may either love them or hate them, if you do happen to fall into the latter-category, then you're resoundingly wrong.
If they are a joke, then excuse us whilst we piss ourselves. If they're a serious rock band, then you'll forgive us for heralding this as one of the singles of the year. And if this conundrum is what you find most entertaining about The Darkness, you shouldn't be surprised if you turn around to see us insulting you behind your back. There are times when you should take yourself seriously, and there are times to enjoy 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love'.
Actually, what a depressing time it would be when you didn't find this pleasurable beyond rational belief - come on: the falsetto vocal; the huge riffs; the stadium-clapping bit; and solos so cheesy they'd fit perfectly with wine and whatever the f**k 'nibbles' are. Justin Hawkins even shouts 'Guitar!' before one of them for God's sake.
Thanks to The Darkness, 2003 will forever stand as the year we got rock right.
