Delays - 'Nearer Than Heaven' (Rough Trade)

Delays - 'Nearer Than Heaven'

In spite of the mock-retro sleeve-artwork, South Easterners Delays are far detached from the ear-ringing ferocity of anything to do with a garage and various particles of rock. Angelic, endearing, sweepingly immediate, this is the sound of a band so archly beyond their 'new-band' and 'debut-single' status that - like all great romances - you're prepared to fall in love upon your first hearing.

'Nearer Than Heaven' is the sort of starry-eyed wonderment that too many contemporaries are shy of achieving - all glowing keys, jangling guitars amidst a Greg Gilbert-possessing voice collectively designed to reduce you to a state of shivering patheticness... Markedly impressive, then.
