The Delgados - 'Coming In From The Cold' (Mantra)
3/5
By: Austin Louis Ray

The Delgados make commanding music even within the most minimalist of presentations. Listening to the band's latest single, 'Coming In From The Cold', makes this apparent enough. These aren't songs that are appreciated for their lyrics or even specific musical aspects; they are to be taken in as a whole, each its own cohesive grouping of different elements intended to make one beautiful piece.
Throughout the title-track, 'Coalman' and 'Crutches', Emma Pollock's dreamy vocals intertwine with Alun Woodward's as if they were born to sing together; even when sometimes only one will take the main duties whilst the other's voice flutters in the background, barely there, it's still entirely necessary. As such, the accompaniment makes for a sleepy, melancholy backdrop that accentuates these vocals sublimely, 'Coalman' particularly showcasing the lavishness of what The Delgados have to offer.
In all respects, too, it's not fair to judge The Delgados from a mere three songs, but as far as this trio of tunes is concerned, don't be expecting any riff-oriented tracks from the group anytime soon; in fact, The Delgados seem acutely happy to remain bold as ever, in the least imposing way possible.
