The Donnas - 'Who Invited You' (Atlantic)

3/5

By: Thomas Hannan

The Donnas

Who'd have thought it, The Donnas go trance! Well, it was about time for a change of direction; there are only so many punk-rock songs about goofy guys that four girls can play, you know... What's that you say? This is one of them too? Oh. Quelle surprise...

Credit where it's due though, they have grown up a little bit. They now display their real names proudly beside their pseudonyms (so, they're not all called Donna after all), and have exchanged the childish rock for something that's, well, slightly less immature, but not a lot.

'Who Invited You' is a song about parties, and boys who come to those parties and turn out to be jerks. Whether it's the male sex or potential critics who are against them, The Donnas just 'don't care.' On this evidence, a killer chorus and a couple of guitar chords is all you need to slay your enemies anyway.

In the hands of other all-girl punk combos, this is potentially quite a political, feminist statement. With this lot, it'd have a job to be more frivolous, but post-feminism was never really party-talk anyway. The Donnas rock in their own special, if not entirely unique or profound style. If you don't like it, frankly, who invited you anyway?
