The Dysfunctionals - 'Payback Time' (Meanwhile / Sony)

Denim-time, baybee. Levis' latest jean-floggers The Dysfunctionals are notable for three reasons: firstly - their association with one Nellee Hooper (that's Madonna and Bjork's producer to the plebs amongst us); two, their guest-vocalist on this here (most likely) one-off single is none other than Kelli Ali, ex of the Sneaker Pimps; and, thirdly, yes - it's that song which accompanies the UK TV-advert that features a huge mouse.
Now the formalities are out of the way - any chance of substance? For a change, yes rather, Ali's rasping vox given the deep-pan, pan-fried distortion technique against a grungy dance-pop collage of simmering grooves designed to nod the head. It's all graciously fun stuff, if a little too stylised to truly find warmth amidst.
