Echoboy - 'Lately Lonely' (Mute)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan

So, here it is ladies and gentlemen - the future. In terms of what music will sound like, perhaps not, but in terms of how we'll get it, quite possibly. Echoboy are, amongst others, pioneering a new way for the likes of us to buy our music, one that means to get your hands on 'Lately Lonely' (the second single to be lifted from their 'Giraffe' album), you'll have to make your way to the band's official website and get clicking. A nice innovative gimmick, yes, but as for the music...
It's a puzzling one. Perhaps Echoboy (known to his mum as Richard Warren) is using this new technique of music-supply to create something a little unexpected - after all, a New Order-esque hazy dance rock track isn't quite what you'd expect from a man who once was for a brief period a member of Oasis. It simultaneously thumps and sways its course away with misty vocals distorted almost to the point of indecipherability. 'Lately Lonely' is all that with church-bells on- quite literally.
But as interesting as some of its ideas and the means that make the record available are, it remains difficult to escape the fact that this is hardly the most exciting piece of music, possibly down to the fact that the track has done all it set out to do within the opening verse. If web distribution is the way forward, it was probably hoping for a more dazzling ambassador.
