Elbow - 'Newborn EP' (Uglyman)

4/5

By: Toby L

Aren't EP's wicked? The idea of four or five tracks on one CD, not enough material for an album, but too much for a single - genius. It can prove an essential introduction to a band that are worth exploring to get the gist of what they're about and not allow you to get put off by hearing too much of them straight away. Elbow, however are an exception to this; we want to hear more of them.

Elbow - 'The Newborn EP'

Recorded in the Bath Real World Studios, lead track 'Newborn' is a sumptuous and sublime piece of music, 'an epic declaration of love and the realities of growing old with someone', according to frontman Guy Garvey (they should be famous just for his name). Flip-side 'Kisses', meanwhile, is just peculiar; soothing acoustic guitar with a conversation in the background, the drums on 'Bitten by the Tailfly' are threatening, as is the guitar that kicks in a after a minute, whilst the vocal in 'None One' is multi-tracked genius. An intriguing and stunning new effort by the 'Bow, where melancholy has never sounded quite so necessary.
