The Electric Soft Parade - 'Silent To The Dark 2' (DB Records)
4/5

'Silent To The Dark's incarnation as an epic nine-minute growler on the band's debut LP has been disputed by some to be wholly 'self-indulgent' and 'over the top'. What's wrong with this? Whether you like the track's duration or not, what results is a brave and thrilling attempt at distorting the concept of a pop song by including both the most marketable chorus ever - not unlike Teenage Fanclub, mind - as well as the noisiest instrumental-snippets to be heard since the Floyd were last seen wobbling off and on stages.
Still, the restrained radio-edit is what's to be released, and - because of this - no doubt it'll be a top-40 hit, and the breakthrough single for the brothers White. Deservedly so, their last twelve months has seen endless arrays of live-dates, press-duties and recording, all whilst their sound naturally became really rather awesome along the way.
The most exciting thing about ESP, aside from them being a new, young band with a creative input easily rivaling most other musical efforts of now, is that you just feel they're going to get even better. For the meantime, though, this is a timely reminder of the quality that all UK guitar-music should strive for.
