Electronic Eye Machine - 'Jesus Song' (Crystal Songs)
3/5

Electronic Eye Machine are an oddity in every sense of the word. Firstly, they're from Sunderland in the UK - which, up 'til now, never seemed from the outside to be a particularly active location in terms of rock-star spawning - and, secondly, they use this, their debut-release, to proclaim 'Jesus Christ' over and over in the most pained of yells. The strange thing is, though, you just can't tell whether this band is Christian-rock or, indeed, just a blinkered blasphemous bunch that enjoy using the Lord's name in vain. Either way, this EP is pretty special stuff.
Where EEM succeed is via their way of bringing together acoustic-driven melodies and fusing them into epic fairy-tale-esque rhyme-schemes, and generally messing them up in a truly uplifting way. Take lead-track, 'Jesus Song', for instance, which progresses in a fairly pop vine before exploding into a free-style jazz instrumental smash-up and then returning to 'normal' again. They almost sound like a variation of Cosmic Rough Riders - albeit, a version with a firm kick up the arse and a passion in its musical-quest. However, second track, 'You're Not Supposed To', is slightly better at trying to define their dynamic efforts, its key tag-lyric 'Do something different like you're not supposed to' actually working as a perfect description in itself of this rather refreshing new act.
It's too early to tell whether or not Electronic Eye Machine will need intervention from the man above that they sing of in order for them to achieve notoriety, but the early signs from their music alone suggest that they've got what it takes...
