esQuire - 'Brandy & Xanax' (Rex Records)

4/5

By: Toby L

esQuire

Playfully melodic and not overly intent to create a scene, esQuire makes his British record-debut with the restrictive, flowing groove of 'Brandy & Xanax'.

A part of the Detroit stable of acts currently revving up praise for the big old town in the States and just as patriotic to the surroundings as his associates (sort of - check out the b-side on this release, simply titled 'Detroit City', for such evidence), the only difference between the 'Quire's fizzing energy and other folk is that it ain't conveyed in sleazy guitar-form - but, instead, flavoursome hip-hop.

And with a title-track that more than merits benign attention and some hip-shaking, shape-throwing, it looks set that yet another creditable performer has darted into our lives.
