The Fever - 'Pink On Pink' (Kemado)
4/5

Look! Up in the sky! Less earnest than Radio 4. More concise than !!!. It's the latest wave of New York City punk-funk, in the guise of The Fever and their debut release, the 'Pink on Pink' EP. And if the five tracks here are any indication, The Fever definitely emphasize the punk - with singer Geremy's Iggy-esque tones and guitarist/producer Sanchez's angular lines - without neglecting the requisite groove.
So, let's dive right in, charging past OK, if punk-by-numbers opener 'Ponyboy' (it's much better live) to the EP's two standouts: 'Ladyfingers' and 'Bridge & Tunnel'. The former is marked by a dancey rhythm and a bombastic, 'New Wave Hits of the '80s' delivery, while the latter is a driving critique of suburban/urban party culture in a Stooges stylee. Both are exhilarating three-minute musical blasts.
Moreover, give The Fever credit for attempting to cover a song as complex as Sheila E's 'Glamorous Life'. It doesn't completely work, mind, but it's an inspired choice that makes for an entertaining listen.
Looking forward, it would prove testimonial to behold further diversity from the band, and a more dynamic recorded sound. But these are early days; and, for now, 'Pink on Pink' will do just fine.
