Jordan Fields - 'I Wanna Thank You' (Mo Wax)
3/5

After firmly cementing their reputation as a label of legendary stature, the latest offering from Mo Wax sees the return of Jordan Fields - a man now operating under his own name after hiding under pseudonyms such as Surreal Fields and Club Orchestra for nearly ten years. Based in Chicago, Fields' main aim is to keep you in stock of this distinctly special brand of laid-back house, which is not only the bearer of more depth than your average ocean, yet also bass that actually does possess the power to shake buildings. (You want more evidence? Try shoving this on your turntable and telling the room to stop moving... Doesn't quite happen that way now, does it?)
'I Wanna Thank You', Jordan's first release for a year, may well be house of the relaxed variety, but that doesn't stop it from being simultaneously one of the most pumping dance tunes of recent times. Its more engaging strengths lie in its subtlety - although based heavily around thumping beats and ambient sweeping noise, closer investigation reveals leanings towards jazz, US hip-hop and infectious bongo rhythms, effortlessly crafting a very intelligent piece of work all round.
A tried and tested formula, but the trick of occasionally dropping everything except for the vocal line before rushing the bass back in with a heart-stopping bang is done as well here as you will hear anywhere else, the affair only suffering from its sheer length - although, to be fair, you're given warning; that 'parts one and two' sticker isn't slapped on by mistake.
So, whilst immediacy isn't one of Jordan Fields' most often used cards, playing his game is not something to be avoided. As the old saying goes, patience most certainly brings its rewards.
