The Fiery Furnaces - 'Crystal Clear' (Rough Trade)

The Fiery Furnaces - 'Crystal Clear'

Candidate for bizarre, most sporadic debut of 2003, Rough Trade's most recent signings The Fiery Furnaces are as schizophrenic as we should allow any one act to be - one minute, stomping drums and growling guitars; the next, plinky-plonky piano and walls of noise, or whirling synths. It's like The Kills in a head-on collision with Burt Bacharach.

As such, both haunting, yet with its own irreverent charm, though the 'Furnaces don't succumb to any one genre sound-scape, their quirky, wonky sonics are quite possibly the most enviably surreal abound in the present-day climate. Just don't expect to hum any of the tunes.
