Four Day Hombre - 'The First Word Is The Hardest' (Crystal Songs)

3/5

By: Clara Burtenshaw

Four Day Hombre

Four Day Hombre spearhead a current emotive indie renaissance with an EP that fuses early Radiohead with Soulwax. They follow the golden rules of melody-induced indie with doleful vocals not dissimilar to those of Mr. Martin of Coldplay, spattering the drum-machine incongruously over it. There is even some piano in the next.

However, 'The First Word Is The Hardest' and 'Resolve' are easily surpassed by 'Too Cool To Shop' - a maelstrom of synth, xylophone samples and upper-octave singing that doesn't quite know which direction it is travelling in (though in some places 'The Bends' is a fair bet).

A quite spectacular mixture of beats and in-between squiggles within a promising debut-EP.
