Joy Zipper - 'The Stereo & God' (13 Amp / Vertigo)
4/5

'Quaint' in indie-rock...? The two have stumbled across each other's paths some times, for sure - Cocteau Twins; Pixies; The Smiths at their more playful, calamity-stricken. And - now - Joy Zipper.
Husky, fe/male-entwining vocals, quickly strummed bursts of infectious, harmonious schmindie and a breezy, ethereal innocence which charms and compels upon immediate exposure. Yet, thankfully, the twosome's formula never borders on trite... Like-minded, Canadian avant-garde-poppers Broken Social Scene would beam.
Amid their debut mini-LP, JZ have mustered a whole, gleaming collage of instantaneous and picturesque melodies, albeit with fuzzy guitars, subtle strings and rather fanciful titles ('Check Out My New Jesus'; 'Gun Control') to boot. And when the duo-mastermind behind the enterprise duet on the rolling stomp of 'Window', altogether bearing a bolstered, shaggy, world-weary serenity, you're quite happily prepared to surrender your lo-fi soul at the throb of a heartbeat.
Quietly rousing in its execution, 'The Stereo & God' may form one of the subtler winter listens - yet at the perk of best capturing the most introspective and chilling of seasons, whilst still unearthing and sustaining a consistent, stealthy glow throughout.
