Franz Ferdinand - 'Darts Of Pleasure'

Paranoid, tight, uniformed, possessive of the German-language, and with dashing cymbals and razor-tight drumming to boot, Scotland's Franz Ferdinand are one of the new bands of the year (and just how many times have we been fortunate enough to declare that once again in '03?).

Part-Zappa, part-Neil Hannon, it's the off-the-wall delivery of FF's frontman that perhaps most propels the band's urgency into that of a fearsomely vivid, creatively teasing prospect - robust guitars, chintzy keyboards and spiralling melodies also of the timely essence, last track of the release 'Shopping For Blood', with its schizophrenic The Fall-meets-Adam & The Ants-via-Blur hybrid, as terrifying as it is rousing.

With fantastic, puzzling lyrics in abundance also (sample: 'It's leather for leisure and velcro for sport/It's a first appearance and a new suit for court'), Franz Ferdinand could prove one of Domino Records' most important, instantly appealing signings yet.
